Scotmid smells success with Fragrance House

By Greig Cameron on Jan 27, 10 09:42 AM in Retail

Always nice to see something we first reported in Business7 coming to fruition.

In October last year Colin McLean, operations director of Scotmid and Semichem, told me about the trial the company were doing of a standalone perfume business in this interview.

Having seen a good uplift in Semichem stores by introducing a more upmarket fragrance selection McLean, pictured, was sure the success could be repeated in a standalone brand.

Now it has been confirmed The Fragrance House concept is being rolled out.

With global fashion brands such as Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, D&G, DKNY and Armani all on the stock list trading was particularly brisk over Christmas.

However the pilot stores in Livingston and Dundee, pictured below with former Miss Scotland Stephanie Willemse, cutting the ribbon, have had "very strong" sales figures since they launched in October and November last year.

That performance has convinced the team at Scotmid there is a clear market for the business.

A further 10 shops are planned in the next 12 months across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

This will create around 70 new jobs.

While details on the exact locations are being kept under wraps at the moment McLean said the strategy for 2010 is "already agreed and in progress."

Longer term he believes The Fragrance House could be expanded up to 40 outlets.

By using the infrastructure and processes which underpin the turnaround at Scotmid and Semichem this new brand has every chance of success.
